The purpose? to study the possible 'application of its hypersonetic weapon capabilities to counter-enemy hypersonic missiles' before they are ready for operation in peacetime to neutralize enemy threats over areas up north on Earth before US or any other potential war to counter Beijing has commenced.
According to author 'Paul Szabo of The Heritage Foundation' (and China's primary defense advocate on the Taiwan Island at that:) tests can last "days-thousands of miles at incredible Mach 12, speed approaching 25,000 and even several billion miles per minute," without affecting flight accuracy. The US Air-Independent Side-Propulsion and Hypersonics Office [AISO] released to Congress several new classified reports last November.
